RHONERT PARK -- A Rohnert Park grandmother was hospitalized Wednesday, recovering from surgery on wounds suffered when her pet pit bull turned on her and mauled her.
Police report that the woman, 66-year-old Tommie Munoz, was arguing with her 36-year-old son Steven Alvarado at an address on Circle Drive around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
During the argument the dog reportedly began to attack Alvarado, who is also the dog's co-owner. In an apparent attempt to protect her son, Munoz reportedly stepped between Alvarado and the dog. At that point, police report the dog began mauling Munoz.
Munoz other son, 41-year-old Joseph Alvarado, intervened to protect his mother. He beat the dog away with a shovel and eventually contained it in one of the bedrooms of the home, police reported.
Joseph reportedly transported his mother to the Rohnert Park Urgent Care Center, but due to the serious nature of her injuries, she was then taken by Sonoma Life Support Paramedics to Memorial Hospital, police report.
At Munoz' request, officers assisted by Joseph Alvarado and the city's animal shelter supervisor attempted to remove the dog from the home. Officers first attempted to use tranquilizers in the dog's food, but that proved unsuccessful. Ultimately, police report that Tasers and pole-mounted animal nooses were necessary to capture the dog.
The pit bull was taken to the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter where it will be held in a mandatory 10-day quarantine pending any further actions, police reported.
