Fong Denies Suhr Reassignment Linked To Protest

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco police Chief Heather Fong announced today she has recommended Deputy Chief Gregory Suhr for a security position at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Fong said the reassignment has nothing to do with Friday night's anarchist protest in the Mission District in which a police officer was seriously injured. Suhr was in charge of patrol units that night, and the police response to the incident is being evaluated. Fong said the general manager of the PUC asked her to recommend someone to lead security for the agency that oversees water and power service. She added that she has been working with the PUC on the appointment for several months. Effective Saturday, Suhr will be assigned to the chief's office so that he can "participate in the interview process," Fong said. "I have full confidence he has the ability to fulfill the duties of this position," Fong said. If Suhr gets the job, he would be assigned to the commission as a representative of the Police Department, Fong explained. Fong said she has not found a replacement for Suhr in field operations. He is expected to help with that person's transition, she said. Gary Delagnes, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, said today he is "saddened" by news of Suhr's move. "I think Greg is a good guy and he did a good job," Delagnes said. "I think he has been a hell of a cop and a hell of a deputy chief and I am sorry he has moved."
