Charter Jet Stolen From Florida Found In Georgia

Posted: 2:28 pm PDT October 11, 2005Updated: 3:05 pm PDT October 11, 2005

Authorites are trying to find out how a 10-person passenger jet reported stolen in Florida wound up at an airport near Atlanta.

The $7 million Cessna Citation VII landed at the Gwinnett County airport late Saturday or early Sunday. Authorites said they found no evidence of weapons or drugs, and they said they've "ruled out anything diabolical or sinister."

Workers at the airport found the plane on the tarmac at about 1 p.m. Monday -- less than two hours after it was reported stolen in St. Johns County, Fla. Since then, crime scene technicians have investigated the interior of the plane, which is owned by Pinnacle Air of Springdale, Ark.

The FBI said the theft doesn't appear to be linked to terrorism. The Federal Aviation Administration is checking to see if there are any records of the plane's flight.

No flight plan was filed for the plane over the weekend and the aircraft's transponder, which identifies it to air traffic controllers, was apparently not turned on, reported Jacksonville, Fla., TV station WJXT.

A Gwinnet County policeman said planes are easy to steal for someone who knows how to pilot them because a key usually isn't needed to start the engines.

Two of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers got some of their flight training at the same Georgia airport.

Pinnacle Air had no comment on the incident Tuesday, but did say it was cooperating with the investigation.
