MARTINEZ -- Union Pacific Railroad Co. will pay a $10,000 fine as a result of oil leaks into Suisun Bay. The fines, announced Wednesday, follow a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency investigation. The investigation began in February with a report that rain was washing oil from contaminated soil into a storm drain at a Martinez service yard. The EPA also ordered Union Pacific last summer to submit a plan for preventing spills and to clean up the site. Officials say that work has been completed.
