Man arrested for battery on police officer, DUI

SPARKS -- A crazy scene occurred on Saturday when a reckless driving police call turned into the attempted assault of a police officer by the suspected driver.

Saturday morning at around 8:45, Sparks Police officers responded to a report of a reckless driver in the area of Baring Boulevard and Springland Drive where the caller stated a small passenger car had spun out, struck a curb, and then continued east.  Officers located the vehicle unoccupied in the 3200 block of Danville Drive with a flat tire.

Officers questioned neighbors about the vehicle and the neighbors indicated the owner had parked the car a short time before the police arrived and sped away in a small white truck.

While officers were standing in the driveway speaking to the neighbors, the the white truck being driven by a subject later identified as Hector Barrera-Estrada, was observed traveling east on Danville Drive at a high rate of speed, slowing abruptly and then pulling into the driveway next to the two officers narrowly missing them.  Officers made contact with Barrera-Estrada as he exited his vehicle and noted he appeared to be impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Officers attempted to question Barrera-Estrada and he pushed passed them and tried to enter a residence.  A struggle ensued between Barrera-Estrada during which time he put his hands around one officers neck and ripped her necklace off.  The officer was able to disengage with subject Barrera-Estrada and the other officer on scene used an electronic control device to stop subject Barerra-Estrada's attack.  Once the device was used, Barrera-Estrada was taken into custody without further incident.

One officer received minor injuries to her neck and Barrera-Estrada and the second officer on scene were uninjured.

Several neighbors also reported Barrera-Estrada was spinning his vehicle in circles and driving recklessly earlier in the morning however the police were not called at that time.

Barrera-Estrada was booked into the county detention facility for Battery on a Police Officer, Obstructing an Officer, Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Driving and destruction of Property.  Barrera-Estrada's bail was set at $23,740.00.
