Man run over by own car, arrested for assault in road rage incident

 

RENO -- A simple case of road rage got way out of hand when a man allegedly assaulted another driver with a gun, before having his leg run over, crashing his vehicle and finally being arrested this morning near downtown Reno.

Reno Police responded to Plaza St. and Lake St. on the report of an accident resulting from road rage.  The investigation revealed that the suspect pointed a handgun at the victims while following them in his vehicle.  Once the victims stopped at Plaza St. and Lake St. the suspect intentionally rammed their vehicle with his vehicle.  He then exited his vehicle and approached the victim vehicle. 

The suspect’s vehicle was left in reverse and began to roll backwards. While attempting to stop his vehicle, the suspect’s leg was run over causing moderate injuries.  His vehicle then struck a wall.

The suspect, identified as 69-year-old  Randolph Rothman, attempted to leave the scene but was stopped by officers who arrived on scene.  He had a .380 caliber handgun in his pants pocket when contacted by police.

Rothman was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. As of Monday afternoon he was still in the hospital.

Upon release from the hospital Rothman will be arrested and charged with Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon (two counts), Carrying a Concealed Weapon without a Permit.
