Recent rash of Honda vehicle thefts

RENO -- The Reno Police Department has seen an increase in the theft of Honda cars over the last two months, which have been occurring in the City of Reno.

Since May 18, 2012 the Reno Police Department has seen over 20 stolen Honda cars reported throughout the entire city. The thieves are targeting Honda vehicles between the years of 1990 and early 2000. These vehicles are being targeted due to the fact one single filed down key can provide access into the vehicle, and can also be used to start the vehicle. The thieves appear to be stealing these vehicles for the valuables that are left inside, then dumping the vehicles at all area locations. We are also seeing other similar make vehicles stolen from the area where the vehicles are being dumped.

RPD is trying to provide awareness to those citizens who drive these types of vehicles, and to hopefully prevent further thefts. Citizens are asked to never leave valuables in your vehicle, regardless of how long it is left unattended, and if you must leave them in the vehicle, ensure they are out of sight.

Other things to consider, is an anti-theft device, such as a car alarm, or a steering wheel lock. Most thieves will move onto another vehicle if these theft devices are visible. If you chose not to purchase one of these items, then take steps to park your vehicle in a secured location, or a location that is visible to others, or in a lighted area.
