RENO -- Two men are in custody tonight and a Reno Police Officer injured after an attempted hold-up at the Valero gas station located at 1000 W. 2nd Street in Reno.
The incident unfolded last night at around 8:00, when a man approached the counter with his face covered, stated he had a gun, and demanded all of the money in the cash register. He and the clerk argued as a customer lay on the floor nearby per the suspect’s demand. When the suspect didn’t produce a gun, the clerk refused to give him the money and the suspect ran from the store with the clerk chasing him.
Three Reno Police officers leaving another call happened to be passing the store and were flagged down by the clerk. One of the officers chased the suspect on foot to a waiting car in the 100 block of Keystone. When the suspect saw the officer, he continued running to the area of Boyd Place and First Street where another of the officers found him. The suspect and that officer struggled when the suspect resisted arrest.
Both the suspect and the officer suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from a local hospital.
In the mean time, officers located another man hiding in the car who refused to show himself in spite of repeated demands from the officers to do so. He was eventually contacted at the car and had to be physically removed.
The man in the store was identified as 28-year-old Garrett Jay Churchill, and he was charged with Attempted Armed Robbery, Burglary, Battery on a Police Officer, two counts of Obstructing and Resisting, Possession of Heroin, and an unrelated no bail warrant.
The man in the car was identified as 23-year-old Eugenio Ortega, and he was arrested for three unrelated misdemeanor warrants.
Anyone having information relating to this crime or the suspect(s) should contact the Reno Police Department at 334-2115, Secret Witness at 322-4900, www.secretwitness.com, or text the tip to 847411 (TIP 411) keyword - SW
