Undercover alcohol compliance check of bars near UNR results in 50% compliance

RENO -- Detectives from the Regional Street Enforcement Team and members from the City of Reno Code Enforcement conducted an undercover compliance check of bars near the University of Nevada, Reno campus as students return for the spring semester.

During the late night hours of February 1, 2013 and extending into the early morning hours of February 2, 2013 six bars were checked utilizing a 20 year old and 18 year old volunteer. The volunteers presented their real identifications if they were requested by employees of the bar.

The compliance check was the result of recent complaints about several bars serving alcohol to students and other individuals under the age of 21. The funding for this operation was a joint commitment from the Regional Street Enforcement Team participating agencies and a federal grant secured by our partner Joint Together Northern Nevada (JTNN).

During the operation one or both of the volunteers were served alcohol at the following locations:

  • Chewy & Jugs, located at 3635 Kings Row
  • The Wolf Den, located at 1305 North Virginia
  • The Pub N’ Sub, located at 1000 Ralston

Each of the bartenders who served the underage volunteers received a misdemeanor citation for “sales of alcohol to a minor” which has a pre-designated bail/fine of $500.00.

The bartender at the Pub N’ Sub also received a Nevada Department of Taxation Civil Infraction for not having attended the alcohol awareness training mandated by law, which carries a separate pre-designated fine of $500.00.

The following bars passed the alcohol compliance check and refused to serve alcohol to the underage volunteers:

  • Archie’s, located at 2195 North Virginia
  • The Little Waldorf Saloon, located at 1661 North Virginia
  • Corkscroo Bar & Grill, located at 10 E. 9th Street

The Regional Street Enforcement Team provided suggestions and notice to the failing establishments to educate and enter into a partnership with those bars to increase awareness and compliance of alcohol laws.

The Regional Street Enforcement Team, and our partner JTNN, would like to recognize and publicly thank the bars who passed the compliance check and encourage continued vigilance while verifying they only serve alcohol to customers over the age of 21.

The Regional Street Enforcement team is comprised of Detectives from the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, and the University of Nevada Police Department.
