'No Child Left Behind' law continues its decline

  • comment(1)

Two more states received permission on Friday to ignore much of the "No Child Left Behind" law.

Washington state and Wisconsin got waivers from the Department of Education to bypass the federal law designed to increase student achievement.

Instead the 26 states will develop their own plans for measuring academic performance.

Congress has been trying to overhaul the federal law, which requires students to be proficient in reading and math by 2014.

Exemptions from the law will give states more flexibility in how they spend federal dollars for education.

Nevada has not yet requested a waiver from the No Child Left Behind requirements.
