RENO, NV -- In light of Friday’s events in Connecticut, security throughout the Washoe County School District is getting a lot of attention.

Mt. Rose School in downtown Reno has a single point of entry passage, which means once school begins at nine and before it wraps up at three, there is only one way in and one way out.  Not every school in the district has the single entry, and principle Krissy Brown says she feels lucky to have it.

“I do feel like they are safe and then events happen like this where you get a wakeup call,” says Brown. “I don’t think you can have a safe enough place for kids. I think eventually, in my opinion, it should be like airports.”

At her school, guests walk up to the security camera in front of the schools main entrance and push a doorbell button to get authorization to enter the school.  The whole process is recorded and saved in the school video database for years.

However, Washoe County School District Police Chief Mike Mieras says security throughout the district is now being re-evaluated. “What we do after an event like this is we take a step back and take a look at what happened there,” says Mieras. “We do a white wash of that and see what we can do better.”

He says they are now focusing on creating more fences, door locks from the inside and more single points of entry around the district.  “It takes a whole community to raise kids,” says Mieras. “We ask the neighbors and we do training with our staff and our students but we also ask parents and people and community members if they hear anything that is suspicious to please contact us.”

Staff and students of Mt. Rose School also practice safety drills once a month, a number which could now increase too.
