Hillary Schieve was born and raised in Reno, Nevada and attended Reno High School. Hillary loves this city and is very active in the community. She has been a voice for the Virginia Street lighting project, is a founder of the Midtown Merchants Association and currently serves as President of Nevada Youth Empowerment Project for homeless teens in Nevada. And, Hillary founded the Clothing Collaborative, which provides clothing to local teenagers at risk.

Hillary grew up figure skating and trained in Colorado Springs at the Olympic training center. She competed nationally in pursuit of an Olympic dream but was stricken with kidney failure from a strep throat infection. Hillary received a kidney from her sister Amanda Sanchez, a local News Anchor on KOLO Channel 8. Hillary is a tremendous advocate for organ donation and spearheaded a national campaign for the World’s Largest Organ Donor Card and lobbied nationwide to promote organ donor awareness.

In 2008 Hillary’s passion for business and recycling seemed to be a natural fit for her current endeavor, Plato’s Closet. Plato’s Closet is a green clothing concept which pays customers to recycle clothing putting money back in our economy. The concept was so well received, Hillary expanded her business and opened another reuse business reaching an additional demographic and catering to business professionals.

Hillary’s business success, even in the worst economic time since the great depression, landed her the Reno Gazette-Journal’s 2011 “Entrepreneur of the Year" award. Hillary was also named by Nevada Young Professional Network and the Gazette-Journal as a “Top Twenty under Forty” recipient for her business expertise and her community service endeavors.

ISSUES

Economic Growth and Job Creation

Being a job creator herself, Hillary knows all too well the hurdles local businesses face just trying to open its doors. She started her business in 2008, just as we were entering the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, so she understands the need to clear away the red tape and bureaucracy that hinder job creation. Hillary’s clear understanding of the financial crisis led to the realization that you must think outside the box to persevere in troubled times – whether you’re running a business or a City.

And Hillary’s creative approach to the economy has paid off. She opened her first business and expanded it – then went on the launch a second successful venture - when all the odds were stacked against her. This is the kind of dedication Hillary will bring with her to the Reno City council. And it’s why she was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 2011 by the Gazette-Journal Nevada leads the country in one of the highest rates of unemployment and foreclosure rates in the country. We must be receptive and welcome entrepreneurs with open arms. Small businesses are vital because they bring the lion’s share of jobs to our city. Hillary believes we must entice businesses to open and help retain current business in our city.

Hillary will deploy outside-the-box job creation tactics like allowing vacant commercial properties to house entrepreneurial startups to make it affordable for new businesses. Hillary will spearhead a campaign she calls “Start it up in Reno” a showcase for all the attributes Reno has to offer businesses and companies that want to relocate.

Education

Hillary knows we are at a critical point in education. A thriving education system is essential for attracting new companies to Reno. We must strive for excellence, not just shoot for the average, and no longer will it be sufficient for a small percentage of children to be prepared for success in college.

This change in expectations demands innovative new approaches such as technology based charter schools and “student to student” programs like “Teach for America” but on a much more local level.

Our education system in Nevada must meet a higher standard, one that shall not fail our children. This will involve a whole host of tactics, including strategic partnerships with local government and increased intergovernmental communication.

Public Safety

Public safety must not take a backseat when it comes to enhancing our city and the safety of our citizens. Allowing citizens to be safe in our homes and on the streets is the MOST important function a government can serve. Hillary will provide our first responders with all the tools they need to keep us safe. Moreover, lower crime rates are a key selling point in attracting economic assets and growth. Law enforcement is a vital component in a community's economic development plan. Businesses will consider new locations based on public safety first and foremost. Having. A superior police force and community safety programs will attract new businesses and enhance our tax base, which will further enhance policing operations
