Local political candidates appearing at UNR for town hall

RENO -- University students and the general public can learn more about their local political candidates during a town hall meeting on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union Ballrooms at the University of Nevada, Reno.   Hosted by the Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) Department of Legislative Affairs, this event provides community members with a venue to find more information about the political officials. The public can also pose questions to individual candidates regarding their political platforms.   The political candidates attending the meeting include Teresa Benitez-Thompson, David Bobzien, Greg Brower, Skip Daly, David Espinosa, Ken Lightfoot, Debbie Smith, Tom Taber and Heidi Waterman.   “Our goal is to provide this community and our student population with as much information regarding the upcoming election as possible,” said Michael Stannard, director of the Department of Legislative Affairs. “We want to help educate voters to ensure they can make informed decisions on Election Day.”   During the town hall meeting, a moderator will manage the discussion between the politicians and the public. The candidates will share their political platforms with the audience. After their initial remarks, the community will have an hour to ask questions of the candidates.   This event is one of many offered by the ASUN, which helps promote civic engagement on the University campus.   “Nearly all of our students have the ability to vote in the election and for many of them, this election will be their first voting experience,” Stannard said. “We want to ensure they understand how important their individual votes are to this community, the state and the nation.”
