RENO -- The Reno City Council held their Strategic Planning Session yesterday, beginning the budget planning process for fiscal year 2013-14, and setting long-term direction for the organization.

The session was kicked-off by University of Nevada, Reno President Marc Johnson welcoming the group. Preparation for the Strategic Planning Session included soliciting input from Reno’s community leaders, city employees, and residents through surveys. In the session, Council was presented a summary outlining the results of the surveys, as well as looking at best practices of other successful cities including mission and vision statements. Additionally, Council participated in a visioning segment which included a strengths, weaknesses or challenges, opportunities, and threats analysis; a mission, vision, and value session; and a discussion to establish key strategic priorities. 

City Manager Andrew Clinger began the session by asking the Council to think big and lead us to a vision that will inspire our community to make Reno a better place. “The leadership showed by the City Council in establishing a clear, timeless vision for our City along with complementary strategic priorities will allow me to work with our great team at the City and continue to move the organization forward in a positive direction.”

The Reno City Council developed the following vision and mission statements and strategic priorities:

Vision: “The Biggest Little City in the World” offers exceptional quality of life, culture, and a vibrant, diverse economy.

Mission: To efficiently provide the highest level of services responsive to our community and to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality.

Council Strategic Priorities for Fiscal Year 2013-14:

• Enhance Communication and Citizen Engagement
• Provide Efficient and Responsive City Services
• Provide Safe and Livable Neighborhoods
• Promote a Sustainable and Vibrant Economy

Reno Mayor Bob Cashell closed the session by saying, “This was the best strategic planning session I’ve participated in over the last 10 years. I have a lot of faith in this new council that we are going to do great things together.”
