RENO -- Reno is providing for the needy through a little friendly competition in the annual CANstruction.

Meadowood Mall is hosting the tenth annual Canstruction battle… a team competition building structures out of canned food to provide for the hungry throughout the community.

“It’s very pervasive,” says Jocelyn Lantrip of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. “We’re seeing one in four children don’t have enough to eat, one in five people in Nevada don’t have enough to eat so it’s not going away just yet so every little bit helps.”

Canstruction is put on by the American Architect Institute and participating teams are made up of either students or professionals, like Steven Denti and team NV Energy.

“From the company’s standpoint it’s a great opportunity to show its support for the community, to give back to a charity that’s actually incredibly beneficial to the community,” says Denti.

NV Energy is using, and eventually donating, three thousand cans for their project, that’s around two thousand pounds of food.

“NV Energy wants to be able to show that they support this community and this is one way they can do that,” says Denti. “It’s a fun way we can get employees involved and build something cool out of it.”

They are constructing an electric car and charging station… one of many original ideas along with the hoover dam, baseball bat and the pancreatic cancer ribbon, each competing for numerous awards like best meal, best use of labels, and structural ingenuity.

The displays are up through Sunday for viewing and voting, followed by being distributed throughout the community beginning next week.

Winning structures will have their pictures taken and submitted into the national competition.
