RENO—The Reno City Council voted to pass a resolution to support continued operations at the U.S. Postal Service’s Reno Processing and Distribution Center and the 177 local Post Office jobs associated with it.   The Council stated closing or reducing operations would affect the entire region, add an additional 4.5 cent cost for bulk distribution, and negatively affect local businesses in Reno as well as the rural communities throughout Northern Nevada.  

The adopted resolution will be submitted to the U.S. Postal Service for their public comment period which ends on December 16. Additionally, Council will communicate with the Nevada Federal Delegation stressing the importance of continuing operations in Reno.

  On November 15, 2011, the U.S. Postal Service announced that it is considering closing and/or reducing the processing ability of the Reno Processing and Distribution Center located at 2000 Vassar Street. The American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO advises the outcome of that decision would be the outsourcing (not the elimination) of 177 jobs from Reno, Nevada to West Sacramento, California.
