RENO -- The City of Reno is excited to announce Fit but not Forgotten, a new weekly fitness program for our disabled veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces.

“Improving the quality of life for our residents is a priority,” advises April Wolfe, City of Reno’s Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to be a community partner with our local VA and help promote an active lifestyle for our veterans.”

Program classes will begin on January 8, 2013 at the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center (1301 Valley Road). The weekly fitness classes will cover orientation to equipment, assessment of fitness level, proper technique to develop strength, endurance and flexibility, and discussion of fitness goals. Upon completion of four classes participants will be eligible for a FREE all inclusive facility membership good for one year. The membership will allow continued use of the weight room/cardio room, access to open gym, open swim, and water fitness classes.

The U.S. Olympic Committee and the Department of Veterans Affairs provided grant funding for the new program. The grant funding was awarded to a total of 97 organizations in support of Paralympic sport and physical activity programs for disabled veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces. The grants were provided in hopes of increasing the number and quality of opportunities for physically and visually impaired veterans to participate in physical activity within their home communities and in more advance Paralympic sports programs.
