RENO -- Fire agencies contained a 48-acre blaze in the Palomino area today at 1:45 p.m. Ignited by discharge of a firearm, the fire started around 10 a.m. this morning and consumed 38 acres of private land and 11 acres of public land.
The fire started near 14755 Pyramid Way and quickly spread uphill on rugged and steep terrain. A total of 45 fire fighters from Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (10), the Bureau of Land Management (11) and Nevada Division of Forestry (24) were aided by air support (2 helicopter and 2 single engine air tanker planes) to fight the fire. Although there were three structures near the fire, no structures were threatened or lost as a result of the blaze.
Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Charles A. Moore reminds the community that seemingly harmless sparks, such as those from target shooting, can start a fire in current conditions, “Even firing hand guns can lead to an accidental fire that, fueled by dry, abundant vegetation, spreads quickly. Please use extreme caution with any activity that may create a spark.”
