Five citizens to be recognized for heroic actions following the Amtrak train crash

The Nevada Department of Public Safety-Highway Patrol Division will be recognizing five citizens for their heroic and unselfish actions displayed on June 24, 2011, following the fatal collision involving a commercial motor vehicle and an Amtrak passenger train which took place on US 95 in Churchill County.

 

Three citizens will each be receiving a Citizen Commendation certificate while the other two will each be honored with a Medal of Valor.  One of the citizens being honored with the Medal of Valor, Bob Breen of Battle Mountain, will have his award presented posthumously to his mother, Irene Breen, as he passed on August 3, 2011, following complications from an injury he sustained at the crash site on the day of the event.

 

The specific actions detailing each person’s actions will be read at the awards ceremony this Wednesday in Fallon.  The ceremony is expected to be attended by Governor Brian Sandoval, Chris Perry, Director of the Department of Public Safety; Jim Wright, Deputy Director of the Department of Public Safety; Bernie Curtis, Chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol; and Brian Sanchez, Deputy Chief of Nevada Highway Patrol-Northern Command.

 

The ceremony will be held Wednesday at 1:00 pm inside the gymnasium at E C Best Elementary School, 750 E. Williams Avenue, in Fallon.

  • David Musselman of Hawthorne, Nevada - - Citizen Commendation
  • John Hitchcok of Fallon, Nevada - - Citizen Commendation
  • Amy Alvarez, Fallon, Nevada - - Citizen Commendation
  • Loxie U. Sanders III, Carrier Mills, Illinois, - - Medal of Valor
  • Bob Breen, Battle Mountain, Nevada, - - Medal of Valor posthumously and his award will be received by his mother Irene Breen of Fallon
