Food trucks may be seen in Sparks soon

By Andy Matthews

SPARKS —The Sparks community may soon see a change as the City Council will today consider approving several changes to its municipal code allowing food trucks to operate within town limits and also extend the life of special-use permits.

Currently a temporary-use permit is required before food trucks and other mobile vendors are permitted in the city.  However, such permits are restrictive in nature, limiting the number of days and places mobile vendors can operate.

“That doesn’t work for what some mobile vendors are trying to do,” City Planner Jim Rundle said at a planning commission meeting last month.

The code amendment would set three primary regulations.

First, mobile vendors will have to acquire a business license. Second, they can only operate on private property. Finally, they cannot operate within 300 feet of an established restaurant with taxable sales.
