GSR hosts Wild Sheep Convention

By Jaime Hayden

RENO, NV -- The 2013 Wild Sheep Foundation Convention started yesterday and we here's a little bit of what you can expect at this year’s event.  “There’s really something for everyone,” said President of the WSF, Gray Thornton. “You know there’s outfitters, there’s art, there’s jewelry, there’s furs, there’s just about everything.”

There is plenty to hunt down at this year’s WSF convention at the Grand Sierra Resort. With more than 300 exhibits, organizers say its popularity in the wildlife world is growing fast.  “Our registrations are up 20 percent so we expect this to probably be one of the largest wild sheep foundation conventions we’ve had to date,” said Thornton. “So we are very, very excited and Reno has been good to us.”

Guides and outfitters are here from around the world, as well as gear, guns, art, taxidermy, and wildlife displays.  Chris Klineburger tells us he was involved in the formation of the convention, to also promote a good cause, “and help bring people together with common interest and conserving the wildlife that we all love,” said Klineburger.

Expectations are to beat the nearly 3.6 million dollars the convention raised last year for wildlife conservation. And Taxidermy artist, Shawn Galea is helping that effort through his business,  Advanced Taxidermy.  “We’re really promoting catch and release,” said Galea. “We’re hoping that a client would go fishing, catch a fish, take a photo of the fish, release it, supply us with that information, so we can build an exact recreation of the fish they caught.”

The event runs through this Saturday at 5pm. Admission is 15 dollars a day per person. Children 12 and under are free. Some area stores including Scheel's and Sportsman’s Warehouses have five dollar off coupons to reduce the show price to just 10 dollars per day.
