Home Depot to donate 50K smoke alarms to fire departments

SPARKS -- The Home Depot is partnering with Kidde – the world’s largest manufacturer of fire safety products – and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to donate 2,500 10-year sealed lithium battery smoke alarms to the Sparks Fire Department on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The local donation is part of a nationwide giveaway of $1 million worth of smoke alarms, or 50,000 units.

Sparks Fire Department officials will be on-hand to accept the donation at a fire safety event hosted by The Home Depot, Kidde and NFPA at the Home Depot store, 4655 Galleria Pkwy, at 10 a.m. on Dec. 8. Event activities include:

  • Donation ceremony for 2,500 smoke alarms to the local fire department
  • Opportunity to schedule a free smoke alarm installation for the first 100 attendees who sign up
  • Smoke alarm maintenance tips and fire escape plans from The Home Depot and Kidde experts, including information on the new Worry-Free line of sealed lithium battery smoke alarms
  • Fire safety workshop for children
  • Opportunity for children to color thank you cards for their local firefighters

In addition, Kidde and The Home Depot will make a $25,000 contribution to The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s “Be a Hero, Save a Hero” initiative.  This contribution follows the launch of the public service campaign about this program, which urges homeowners to log on to www.alarmpledge.com and promise to ensure their home has enough up-to-date and working smoke alarms. The pledge also encourages families to create and practice a home fire escape plan.  For every pledge shared, Kidde will make another contribution to The Foundation and the nonprofit organization Help the Good Guys to provide assistance to injured firefighters and surviving families.
