Look out for horses

By staff

The Washoe County Regional Animal Services says you will need to be alert while driving down roads like highway 395 throughout the summer. About sixty horses have been rounded up in the last three months.

Barry Brode, animal services manager says, “If you see the horses near the road way slow down and get in the other lane.”

He says, wild horses are trying to survive and are wandering down to public areas and roads in search for water and food.

“Since it was a dry winter their food supply is very limited, the access for water is very limited.”

It is leading to danger for commuters and sometimes death for the horses.

All creatures veterinarian, Maureen adams says, “They basically die of starvation or if they get injured they don’t have the healing capacity because they are malnourished, it’s a pitiful sight.”

And if you see the wild horses veterinarians say you should not add to the problem.

“Unfortunately a lot of people feed them which is a bad idea then they lose their fear of people and they end up on the highways.”

Another issues is the destroyed borders that used to keep wild horses away from people.

Mr. Brode says, “With the Washoe Drive fire this past January that area the fences are still burnt has not been replaced.”

The agencies do not have a solution yet to keeping wild horses safe and off the roads, but efforts are being made. They hope to hold a meeting soon with community members to at least fix the broken down fences.
