Primary election turn out

By staff

At Mendive middle school in washoe county voters slowly trickled in all day. Only one or two people were voting at a time.

Some voters say any voting day is important, “I have never missed one since I’ve been a citizen for 43 years.”

For voters who came in to cast their vote, they say the low turnout means people are not doing their part.

“I think a lot of people take it for granted you know to be able to vote, just with everything going on with everything else in the world where they can’t cast a vote.”

Polling manager, Marylin Kramer says for other elections this room is usually full.

Kramer says, “Past elections we’ve had good turn outs here 6 to 700 people so it’s been pretty steady.”

She says people may not be engaged in the process because of the caususes.

“Primaries are hit and miss sometimes depends on how interested people are in the races.”

But she says the voters are interested in the senate race and the local commissioners race. However, only about 300 voters are expected to come through here all day.

Voter Thelma Aleman says, “It’s your voice, It counts.”
