Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games debut

By Jaime Hayden

RENO, NV -- The first ever Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games took off yesterday with a timed ice skating race. The program incorporates fitness activities for people ages 50 and older.

For some contestants, like Mik Staeck, the games are a great way to get out and try a new sport.  “This is very friendly, very easy. The support is beyond compare. Folks cheer for you,” Staeck said.

But other competitors may be taking the event a little more seriously. Richard Arbib has competed in speed skating a few times outside of Reno and is excited to get back into the game here.  “Moving to Reno a long time ago I haven’t been able to connect with a speed skating clubs so at least they had these senior games so I was able to do that,” Arbib said.

Organizers say this program is designed to help seniors stay active.  “I think it’s amazing that seniors are more active. We have a huge growing population here of seniors,” special projects coordinator Lisa Michitsch said. “This is the kind of stuff we want to see here.”

Contestants will be competing within their own age groups to try and win gold, silver, and bronze medals.  The games offer contestants 30 individual and team competitions among 10 separate sports. And contestants encourage all senior citizens to participate.  “It’s a hoot. You can’t get hurt,” Staeck said. “It’s a hoot.”’

The senior games run through February 14. And for those that are interested, it’s not too late to sign up. For more information go to www.reno.gov/seniorgames
