Washoe County Registrar's Office Prepares for Primary Election Day

Tomorrow is primary election day in Nevada. Our state is a closed primary election state meaning you may only vote for candidates from your own party, though you may also vote in nonpartisan contests.

If you didn’t take advantage of early voting which ended this past Friday, then you’ll want to make sure you vote tomorrow. Washoe County Registrar of Voters Dan Burk says the turn-out was low,“well early voting, while it went fantastic, it was very light.”

Roughly 22,000 people voted early in Washoe County, which is a good indicator that tomorrow's turn-out will also be light says Burk, “My thoughts are that we are going to be seeing somewhere overall out tof the 218 thousand registered voters in Washoe county about 45,000 or so will actually vote in this election, maybe a little better than that we hope.”

Billinghurst Middle school is just one of the 85 polling locations throughout the county. Volunteers there are setting up and preparing to address your questions tomorrow when doors open at 7am.

And while your mind may be focused on the upcoming presidential election, organizers say these local elections have a major impact on our community. “Sometimes we forget that councilmen and the council might decide this is where a street goes, or this is where a light is going or this is the ordinance for this area.  all kinds of things that we don’t think about that are true about local government and it’s the most personal to us it has the most direct effect on our lives and on our community.”

For more information on the candidates you can log onto our website and check out the Nevada election center. Polls close at 7pm.

Voters you must go to your assigned polling location identified on the back of your sample ballot, if you didn’t get a sample ballot in the mail go to http://www.washoecounty.us/voters.com

There’s a total of 27 candidates running for four seats on the city of Reno council, for the 2012 election in Washoe County a total of 142 candidates are running for office.
