RENO, NV -- Just days after Latino voters re-elected President Barak Obama into office, those same voters are demanding action. It seems the take away from this most recent election is that “if somebody wants to win the election they need to listen to Latino issues,” says Community Organizer of PLAN (Progressive Leadership of Alliance of Nevada), Elbir Diaz.

And that may be how President Obama won a reported 80 percent of Latino votes in Nevada.  Now the Nevada Immigrant Coalition and other local advocates are asking for “humane and sensible” reform of the immigration system.  They spoke at the “Progressive Leadership of Alliance of Nevada” headquarters today.

“This last four years we expect him to do comprehensive immigration reform and we expect to do the Dream Act, we expect it to be passed. And that’s what we want, as Latino’s, and as you know on a national level", says President of the board of PLAN, Theresa Navarro.

President Obama promised to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws and create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, so Latino groups also rallied in front of the White House, demanding the President make good on this promise. Community Organizer for PLAN, Mario Delarosa, believes putting this pressure on the Obama administration, will get the President to follow through on his promise.

“And if he’s not listening, we’re going to keep pushing until he understands that this should happen,” says Community Organizer of PLAN, Mario Delarosa.

Navarro believes the Republican Party lost the presidential election because they were not considering this issue.

“The Republicans and everything are now talking about comprehensive immigration reform and finding a way, so that in 2016, they can actually, you know, bring over Latinos over to the other side because that is one of the biggest errors they made,” says Navarro.

But groups that want tougher immigration laws are urging republicans to hold their ground.  “Amnesty and mass legal immigration to the tune of one million green cards a year, will hurt the American worker,” says Immigration Activist, Kristen Williamson.

Democrats in the U.S. Senate are planning to bring up immigration reform soon after the president’s inauguration.
