The U.S. Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Saturdays but continue to deliver packages six days a week under a plan aimed at saving about $2 billion, the financially struggling agency says.

RENO, NV -- Get ready for some big changes in your mail service starting August 5th this year. That’s when the post office will no longer deliver first class mail on Saturdays.

“People are moving to doing a lot of their business online and so the mail volume has dropped drastically,” said area manager of post office operations Toni Passot.  But not all deliveries will be delayed until Monday.  Packages, mail-order medicines, priority and express mail will still get through on Saturdays.

“Our customers have consistently said, do the right thing. Do not become a burden for taxpayers,” said postmaster general Patrick Donahoe.  “And our customers have also told us, we want packages on Saturday."

Donahoe says the plan will save the post office 2 billion dollars a year.  Although the cut service could eventually eliminate more than twenty-two thousand jobs, the impact may not be felt locally.  “We’re not planning any layoffs so they don’t have to worry about their jobs at this point,” said Passot.

Passot tells us she believes most customers will accept the change. That appears to be true from customers we talked to.  “Well I don’t understand why they’re not doing it today instead of waiting until August,” said USPS customer James Fiorini. “I mean if you’re going to do something to save money, let’s do it now when it makes sense.”

Post offices now open on Saturdays will continue to stay open after the new policy takes effect.
