SPARKS -- Police are investigating a rollover accident that occurred yesterday afternoon in which several teens were ejected from the vehicle and could ultimately be tied to gang activity.
Yesterday afternoon at around 2, Sparks Police received multiple 911 calls of a rollover accident at Rock and I Street. The first officer on scene advised that he had 4 subjects down at the scene that were all ejected from the vehicle that rolled over, which was a blue Chevy Tahoe, and two subjects had fled on foot from the accident. A citizen called shortly after saying there was a juvenile on G street that looked like he was badly hurt, Officers found the two that had fled from the scene in the 900 block of G Street, and one appeared to have been ejected from the vehicle, but fled on foot. He was transported to Renown, as were 5 people from the scene of the accident who had a variety of injuries, but nothing appeared life threatening.
The investigation revealed that the Tahoe was east on I Street at a high rate of speed, and witnesses said it never slowed down for the stop sign at Rock. As it entered the intersection, it struck a station wagon that was south on Rock Boulevard. The Tahoe started to roll after impact and struck the curb and fence of a home on the southeast corner of Rock and I, where the 5 occupants were ejected, and came to rest against a parked Toyota Camry.
The driver of the Tahoe was a juvenile, and we suspect he was under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the wagon was also transported to Renown with non life threatening injuries.
No names are being released because most are juveniles.
The Gang Unit is assisting with the investigation because they believe the vehicle was involved in some gang activity in Reno just prior to the accident.
