Distracted drivers the focus of enforcement campaign this week

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Association (CVSA) and the Nevada Highway Patrol Commercial Enforcement Unit will be cracking down on distracted driving and focusing their efforts on commercial motor vehicles this week.

This is just one of many national and annual campaigns to help educate not only the professional drivers who operate commercial vehicles, but the entire motoring public.  There are other similar initiatives we participate in throughout the year such as, the teens and trucks program, but this week we will be especially targeting those drivers, whether in a big rig, passenger car, pickup truck or on a motorcycle, who commit egregious and unsafe driving violations.  It all centers on sharing the roadways safely and responsibly and constantly focusing one’s attention to drive while operating any type of motor vehicle.

This week the Commercial Troopers will be saturating IR580, IR80, US395, and US50, looking for distracted drivers, as well as, other traffic violations. The troopers will be working six hours shift throughout the greater Reno-Sparks and Carson City areas.

According to CVSA, more than 40,000 deaths involving commercial and non commercial vehicles have occurred nationwide on the roadway each year.

According to CVSA young drivers between 16-24 years of age, are involved in 10.1% of fatal accidents and 13.5% of all accidents.

NHP reminds drivers that not to forget commercial vehicles do not stop on a dime as they do need a little more time and distance than a passenger vehicle to stop.  They ask for drivers to please give commercial vehicles extra room, avoid their blind spots, limit distractions while driving and give yourself a little extra time so that you may arrive at your intended destination safely. Remember if you can’t see the truck driver in his or her rear view mirrors they can’t see you.
