SPARKS -- A person is dead after being struck by a vehicle on I80 last night.

Monday night, Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to I-80 Eastbound on a report of a vehicle versus a pedestrian.  Upon their arrival it was determined the driver was traveling eastbound on I-80 near the Rock Blvd/Nugget Ave. exit when the pedestrian ran southbound on I-80.  The pedestrian was struck by the driver and ultimately died as a result of his injuries. 

The Reno Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was requested to handle the investigation as the driver of the vehicle was an off-duty NHP employee.  Preliminary investigation indicates neither speed nor alcohol were a factor in this accident. 

Identification of the pedestrian is being held until next of kin is notified.
