RENO -- Data released shows that roads and streets in Reno were a safer in 2012 and resulted in fewer deaths as a result of traffic accidents.
The Reno Police Department responded to fifteen fatal accidents for 2012, which is a 12% reduction from the previous year. These fatal accidents included:
Eight – Vehicle versus pedestrian
Three – Motorcycle (two single vehicle, one motorcycle versus vehicle)
Three – Single Vehicle
One – Vehicle versus moped

For 2012, the Reno Police Department investigated 2947 accidents which is a 7% increase from 2011. In 2012, The Reno Police Department issued 14,597 citations for 17,684 violations. The following is a ranked list of at fault violations listed in traffic accident investigations:

The Reno Police Department encourages all persons who utilize the roadway to do so in a safe manner by using situational awareness and obeying all laws. All eight of the vehicle versus pedestrian accidents occurred at nighttime. Pedestrian are encouraged to utilize marked crosswalks, wear light colored clothing with reflective material and be aware of their surrounding when crossing a roadway. Drivers should continually scan the roadway of which they are driving upon to look for other vehicles and pedestrians.
Grants Operations
The Reno Police Department has conducted several operations in 2012 utilizing grant funds from the Office of Traffic Safety, Joining Forces, DUI Task Force and US Department of Transportation FMCSA. These sources provide additional grant funding in order to provide additional enforcement targeting specific driving behaviors. They include:

The Reno Police Department would like to thank our partnering agencies in the region who assist with various operations throughout the year. They include: Nevada Highway Patrol, Sparks Police Department, University of Nevada-Reno, Washoe County Sheriffs Office and Washoe County School Police. All agencies conduct traffic enforcement throughout the year within the region to provide a safe environment for all to travel.
