Texans Re-Sign Wiegert; Agree With RB Smith, OT Salaam

(Sports Network) - The Houston Texans have agreed to a contract extension with offensive lineman Zach Wiegert and also agreed to terms with a pair of veteran free agents -- running back Antowain Smith and offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam.

Wiegert has started at guard and tackle for the Texans over the past three years. He began last season as the starting right guard before an ankle injury sidelined him for four weeks, but he returned and played the final seven games at right tackle.

The former Nebraska standout joined the Texans as an unrestricted free agent in 2003 after spending four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was a second-round pick of the Rams in the 1995 draft and has played in 136 NFL games with 128 starts.

Smith has rushed for 6,881 yards and 54 touchdowns in nine NFL seasons and will help take some of the load off Domanick Davis. In 16 games with New Orleans last season, Smith started seven and finished the campaign with 659 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 46 yards.

The former University of Houston star played on a pair of Super Bowl winners in four seasons with New England. He began his career with Buffalo, playing four seasons for the Bills, and also spent one year with Tennessee.

Smith has twice rushed for 1,000 yards in a season, posting 1,124 with Buffalo in 1998 and 1,157 with the Patriots in 2001.

Salaam was hurt for most of the 2006 season, playing in just five games with two starts for Jacksonville. The eight-year veteran has played in 110 NFL games, starting 99, for Atlanta, Denver and Jacksonville.

The San Diego State product played in Super Bowl XXXIII with Denver after the 1998 season and will rejoin his offensive coordinator with the Broncos, new Houston head coach Gary Kubiak.
