Anderson, Browns Power Their Way To First Win Over Bengals

POSTED: 4:47 pm PDT September 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - Derek Anderson passed for 138 yards and a touchdown and Jamal Lewis rushed for 79 yards and another score as the Cleveland Browns defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 20-12, at Paul Brown Stadium.

Anderson finished 15-of-24 passing with an interception, and Braylon Edwards caught three passes for 22 yards and a TD for Cleveland (1-3). Phil Dawson added two field goals in the win.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, starting for an injured Carson Palmer, struggled for Cincinnati (0-4), completing 21-of-35 passes for 156 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Palmer has experienced soreness in his throwing elbow during practice this week after being sacked six times last Sunday in an overtime loss to the New York Giants.

Chad Johnson had three catches for 28 yards and a score, and Shayne Graham booted a pair of field goals for the Bengals.

With Cincinnati clinging to a 6-3 lead after one half, both teams' offenses continued to struggle through a scoreless third quarter. However, Cleveland went ahead early in the fourth.

Starting on their own 20, Anderson, who struggled for the majority of the game, quickly got the offense to midfield after an 11-yard scramble. With some hard running by Jamal Lewis and an efficient short passing game, the signal- caller moved the squad to the four-yard line. Following an incompletion in the end zone, Anderson hit Edwards for four-yard score to put the visitors in front by a 10-6 margin.

On the ensuing Bengals possession, Chris Perry fumbled on the first play of the set, giving the ball back to Cleveland. Four plays and 24 yards later, Jamal Lewis went over left guard for a one-yard touchdown to put the Browns up 17-6. But Cincinnati came right back to make it a five-point contest when Fitzpatrick connected with Johnson for a four-yard TD with 7:46 left in the fourth. The two-point attempt failed.

"We went out and set a tempo early running the football," Jamal Lewis said. "It truly surprised me running the ball as many times as we did. We just came out and set the tempo and played physical. I think the defense started it up. We just matched their tempo and came out and did what we needed to do."

Following a Browns punt on their next drive, Cincinnati took over at its own 20, but Fitzpatrick was sacked and fumbled on the third play of the drive. The Browns recovered on the 19 with 2:10 left, leading to a Dawson 29-yard field goal, giving the visitors a 20-12 lead with 37 ticks remaining.

Fitzpatrick was picked off by Cleveland's Terry Cousins on the Bengals' final drive, and Cleveland ran out the clock to end the game.

"I don't think we were limited," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said about the team's offense. "Ryan adds a different element and he made some first downs with his feet. Those were good, positive things and you have to keep it positive."

After the Bengals went three-and-out on their first offensive possession, The Browns marched 60 yards on eight plays and got a 25-yard field goal by Dawson to take the early lead.

The game turned sluggish for the remainder of the opening quarter, but Cincinnati managed to tie things early in the second. Graham's 42-yard effort capped a 13-play, 68-yard drive with 10:22 left in the half.

In a turnover-filled first half, and Cincinnati on its own 45, Fitzpatrick was picked off by the Browns' Eric Wright on the second play of the set. As he was fighting for extra yardage on the return, the ball was stripped by Perry and recovered by Johnson, allowing the home team to retain possession at the Cleveland 45 with just under three minutes before the break.

Fitzpatrick then completed three short passes taking it to the Browns 32, but the drive stalled and Graham kicked a 45-yard field goal, giving the Bengals a 6-3 heading into the intermission.

That well-worn cliche' about defense winning championships is a proven NFL fact. You won't find a Super Bowl winner this decade who raised the Lombardi Trophy despite playing something less than inspired defensive football come the postseason, though you will find the bones of plenty of teams (2003 Rams and Chiefs, 2005 Colts, 2007 Cowboys) who treated defense as an afterthought littered along those deserted playoff roads of the past.
