New Year's Entertainment Goes Beyond Fireworks
Classic Rock, Metal, Magic All Playing Dec. 31
Rick Garman, Vegas4Visitors.com

If you're going to Vegas for New Year's you're probably coming to see the big fireworks spectacular on the Strip. But, hey, if you've seen one fireworks show you've seen them all, right? So what else is there to do in Vegas on New Year's Eve? Here's a primer:

Downtown goes disco this year with the big party at the Fremont Street Experience featuring live performances by WAR, The Trammps, Love Shack, and the Dazz Band, plus live disc jockeys spinning 1970s and '80s music all night long. At midnight, the FSE canopy will be aglow with a computer-generated fireworks show and the whole four-block party will awash in a massive confetti drop. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased online at vegasexperience.com or by calling (800) 249-3559.

The Goo Goo Dolls are probably the biggest-name band to play New Year's Eve in Vegas this year. Best known for their hit "Iris" from the "City of Angels" soundtrack, the band will be at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay. Tickets are $75 to $125 and can be purchased by calling (877) 632-7400.

If you've got big hair and an even bigger wallet, you may want to head over to the Hard Rock where Metallica will perform. Tickets range from (are you sitting down?) $300 to $500 and can be purchased by calling (800) HRD-ROCK.

The '80s are back in a big way at the Aladdin, with a double bill from Styx and REO Speedwagon. Tickets are $75 to $100 and you can get them by calling (877) 333-9474.

In the "women with big voices from the '60s" category (and that is meant with honest respect) are Connie Stevens, who will perform at the Suncoast ($40 to $50, (877) 677-7111), and the former Vegas casino owner Debbie Reynolds, who will be at the Orleans ($140, (800) 675-3267).

If you'd prefer to have a magical New Year's Eve celebration, you could spend your night with illusionist David Copperfield. He'll be at the MGM Grand, and you can get the $80 to $150 tickets by calling (800) 929-1111.
