Vegas Q&A: What's Laughlin Like?
Updated: 10:45 a.m. EST November 24, 2003 Question: My partner and I recently won a two nights stay at Harrah's in Laughlin, Nev. We've never been there and don't have a clue what to expect. We've been to Vegas many, many times and absolutely love it. Although I am very excited about going somewhere new, part of me is afraid that it won't live up to the Vegas experience. Any and all information that you could offer about Laughlin and what it's like to stay there would be greatly appreciated. Evani Answer: My experience with Laughlin is limited -- I've only been there twice. But from what I could tell you have good reason for being worried about it not living up to the Vegas experience. Don't get me wrong -- it's a lovely little town and it offers a lot of the casino action, fine dining, and entertainment that Vegas does, but it's all on a much smaller, much quieter scale. The dozen or so major hotel-casinos are all lined up along the main drag, by the Colorado River. The only major exception is Harrah's, which is located on a bluff overlooking the town and the river, so there's a bit of a walk or a short drive to get to the other hotels. I've stayed at Harrah's and it's a very nice place -- small but comfortable-and-clean rooms, a decent-size casino and a couple of good dining options. Summertime is the best, and busiest, time to visit since you have a lot of the recreation options open to you, including swimming, rafting, and boating along the Colorado River. The rest of the time, it's pretty much all about the gambling. There are no volcanoes, roller coasters, major production shows, pirate battles or dramatic architecture like you'll find along the Vegas Strip. For more information about Laughlin, I recommend visiting the Web site run by the Laughlin branch of the Visitors and Convention Authority. You can find it at VisitLaughlin.com. Have a great time!
