Olympic Career


Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh captured the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games. With the win, the American duo earned the United States' first Olympic gold in women's beach volleyball. They were joined on the podium by their compatriots, bronze-medal winners Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs.

May-Treanor, the sport's all-time winningest player, competed in the 2000 Sydney Games with then-partner McPeak. The pair finished fifth.

Walsh was also at the Sydney Games, but instead of playing on the beach, she was a member of the U.S. indoor team, which finished fourth.

Career Highlights


The duo has been unstoppable on the beach. May-Treanor and Walsh won a record 89 matches in 2003-04, and won 50 straight from the Olympics until July 2005 on the domestic and international circuits. The pair also claimed three straight world championship crowns.

The pair's success has also resulted in individual accolades. May-Treanor was named the AVP's Most Valuable Player of 2005 and 2006, the Best Defensive Player in 2006, and the Best Offensive Player in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Walsh was named the AVP's MVP in 2003 and 2004, the Best Offensive Player in 2003, and was named the FIVB's Best Hitter, Best Blocker and Sportsperson in 2005 and 2006.

Nicknamed "The Turtle," May-Treanor was born in Los Angeles but attended high school in Costa Mesa, Calif. She played collegiate volleyball at Long Beach State, where she was a member of the 1998 NCAA championship squad. May-Treanor is surrounded by athleticism even away from the court. She is cousins with professional tennis player Taylor Dent, and is married to Marlins catcher Matt Treanor. She has two dogs, Gruden and Boogie.

Personal With Walsh


Called "Six Feet of Sunshine," Walsh played on the U.S. indoor team in 1999 and 2000 before switching to the beach. She played collegiate volleyball at Stanford, where she was named a first-team All-American in each of her four seasons. Walsh comes from an athletic family. Her father played minor league baseball for the Oakland A's, and her mother was a two-time MVP in volleyball at Santa Clara. Her brother, Marte, played basketball at Cal Poly, and her sisters Kelli and KC both played collegiate volleyball at Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount, respectively. Walsh is also married to an athlete, as she tied the knot with fellow beach volleyball player Casey Jennings in December 2005.
