In Sports, Red Beats Up Blue

Study Finds Athletes Wearing Red More Likely To Win

Researchers find that athletes who wear red during competitions are 10 percent more likely to win over their opponent.

German sports psychologists at the University of Munster conducted a study, which was reported in New Science magazine. During their research, psychologists showed taekwondo fights -- featuring one athlete wearing blue protective gear and one in red -- to experienced referees. They then digitally altered the fights to reverse the colors on each fighter and showed the bouts to the same referees again. According to the study, the fighters were given 13 percent more points when they wore red than when they wore blue.

“If one competitor is strong and the other weak, it won’t change the outcome of the fight,” Norbert Hagemann, who led the study, said in the Daily Telegraph. “But the closer the levels, the easier it is for the color to tip the scale.”

According to the Telegraph, a previous study was conducted in 2004 at Durham University. Researchers analyzed boxing, taekwondo and wrestling events and found that nearly 55 percent of the bouts were won by the competitor wearing red.

One of the researchers in the 2004 study said that the experiment proved that the red stimuli were seen as dominant, and that it was possible that wearing red made athletes feel more confident, according to the Telegraph.
