Duncan Elementary prepares for planting season

RENO, Nev. -- Duncan Elementary students will be digging in the dirt along with Washoe County staff members as they prepare for the spring planting season. The group will be cleaning up and prepping 10 garden beds and a hoop house on Friday for the schools community garden, which is located on the west side of the building.

Washoe County Horticulturist Bill Carlos said garden cleanup is an important step to talk about with the students. "The benefit and reason for cleaning the garden before you plant in spring is to remove garden debris, especially rotting vegetables and leaves that may harbor overwintering insects or diseases. It is also beneficial to remove any weeds as they harbor insects."

Carlos will also be demonstrating the proper way to use tools and talk about the importance of irrigation. The project is part of the Washoe County School Districts Partner in Education program between Duncan S.T.E.M. Academy and Washoe County. Once the cleanup is complete, a County staff volunteer will help with the garden, especially during the summer break when the students are out and the growing season is in full swing.
