With spring in the air, Nevada bears to awaken

CARSON CITY (AP) - With spring in the air, Nevada black bears will soon be emerging from hibernation.

And they will be hungry.

Wildlife officials say adult bears without cubs usually begin coming out of their dens in mid-March. Mothers with cubs come out later, usually from mid-April to early May.

When they do, the bears will be on the prowl for food.

Biologists say the bears will eat emergent grasses and forbs, as well as dead and decaying animals.

But they'll also key in on easy pickings from trash. Biologists are warning residents to secure their garbage.

They are urging bear country residents to keep garage doors shut, car doors locked and all sources of food away from bears.

Officials also remind people that it's illegal to feed any big game mammal.
