Horsford wants sheriff probe of armed militiamen

BUNKERVILLE, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada congressman says multiple out-of-state militia groups have established an armed presence that is scaring his constituents caught in the middle of a feud between a rancher and the government over trespassing cattle.

Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford has asked Clark County Sheriff Douglas Gillespie to investigate reports armed militia groups have set up checkpoints where local residents are required to prove they live in the area southwest of Mesquite before they are allowed to pass.

Horsford says the militiamen have remained in place since the government suspended confiscation of Cliven Bundy's cattle two weeks ago in a decades-old dispute over more than $1 million in back grazing fees.

Horsford says the militia members are maligning the town's peaceful reputation. He says some residents fear for their own safety.
