Anti-mining protest held in Reno

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Some 30 people have staged an anti-mining protest outside the headquarters of the Nevada Mining Association in Reno.
Bob Fulkerson of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada says protesters, some of them holding signs, gathered during the protest Friday that coincided with Earth Day.

He accuses transnational corporations the mining association represents of causing environmental damage while "masquerading themselves as the Sierra Club."

He says while the mining association wants Nevadans to believe the environmental impacts are "not so bad," some of the toxins found around hard-rock mines in Nevada include mercury, sulfuric acid, ammonia and cyanide.

According to the mining association's website, the mining industry strives to be a good steward to the environment and a good corporate citizen of the state while employing a well-paid workforce.
