Practice water safety, save lives

RENO - As temperatures rise and the river once again becomes a favorite stomping ground for the overheated, experts reiterate the importance of water safety in the wild outdoors.

The Sparks Fire Department says they responded to several river rescue calls last year. The water entry team has been training monthly since March to prepare for this year and the agency wants to remind swimmers to be aware of surroundings and never swim alone.

"The water that we have is really cold, and it can cause hypothermia really fast, so other people there, they can help you if you get in a problem. If you're wearing a life jacket, it gives you a chance to collect your thoughts and then swim to the side of the river," Darren Jackson of the Sparks Fire Department said.
