Nevada teen pregnancies dropped by half since 1988

LAS VEGAS (AP) Nevada continues to have one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the country but a new report by a reproductive health organization says it has dropped dramatically over the past 25 years.

The non-profit Guttmacher Institute says Nevada's rate was the seventh-highest in 2010 with 68 pregnancies per female teen. That's less than half reported in 1988 when there were 142 per 1,000.

The findings reported Thursday by the Las Vegas Sun indicate about 6,000 Nevada teens became pregnant in 2010. About 3,400 gave birth, an estimated 1,700 had abortions and about 860 suffered miscarriages.

The overall decline mirrors a national trend in which teen pregnancies have dropped about 50 percent since 1990.

The institute says it's because teens have better access to information and contraceptive services.
