Nine people hospitalized after 20 car pileup east of Sparks

SPARKS, Nev. -- Several people are injured and a section of Interstate 80 closed for nearly three hours on Monday after a 20-vehicle crash east of Sparks.

Nine victims were taken by REMSA to Reno-area hospitals before noon, all with non life-threatening injuries.

North Lyon County Fire was one of the first emergency responders on the scene, followed by Nevada Highway Patrol, Truckee Meadows Fire Protection, REMSA, Storey County and other agencies. Once all nine patients were cleared from the scene, officials worked to clear the road of gravel, cars and debris.

NHP is investigating what caused the pileup. Trooper Dave Gibson said a truck carrying three trailers of gravel lost at least one load on the westbound lanes. "The actual truck (driver) did not realize he had dumped a load until a couple of miles up the road. He pulled over and stopped."

A commercial inspector from Nevada Highway Patrol is inspecting the truck, and the driver faces possible charges for dumping the gravel on the highway.

One lane reopened just before noon and cars backed up as far as Fernley began trickling through the scene towards Reno.
