Suspect identified in Sparks shooting

UPDATE: 2:36 p.m., 8/21/14

Investigators have identified the Sparks shooting suspect as Luis Alberto Machado from Carson City.

Officials say at approximately 4 a.m., Machado began firing numerous rounds with different weapons from inside and outside room #214 -- located on the 2nd floor on the south side of the building.

Several officers arrived within minutes and located the suspect firing rounds from a rifle into the parking lot of the Motel. The officers made verbal contact with the suspect who refused to follow verbal commands and continued firing multiple rounds from inside and outside the room.

Officials say at least five vehicles in the parking lot were damaged by Machado’s gunfire that was fired off for approximately 15 minutes. The suspect then fired a volley of shots while exiting the room and pointed a rifle at officers who were on the second floor landing.

A Sparks Police officer fired one round at Machado who then retreated back inside the room. The officer's round lodged in the door frame where Machado had been standing. Machado exited within seconds and surrendered. He was not hit or injured by the officer’s gunfire. Machado was transported to Renown to be treated for minor lacerations from broken glass. He has been admitted to the hospital for irregular vital signs.

No citizens or officers were injured during the incident. Resources from RPD, WCSO and NHP responded to assist and the I-80 freeway was shut down due to the threat posed by Machado firing in that direction. It is possible vehicles that travelled east or west on I-80 between Rock Blvd and 4th Street could have been hit by the gunfire.

Officials are asking residents to contact SPD detectives that were travelling in the area between 4:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. and heard or felt something impact their vehicle.

Investigators have determined Machado fired approximately 100 rounds from three different weapons; an AR15 style 223 caliber rifle, a 40 caliber handgun and 45 caliber hand gun. Investigators also located a trafficking amount of controlled substances in the room.

At this time, officials have no information indicating why Mr. Machado took these actions. He will be booked for the appropriate charges upon his release from the hospital.
