Road Work Ahead: Summer construction projects will continue into fall

RENO, Nev. -- Summer may be winding down, but road construction is not slowing any time soon. More roadwork is ahead and that could mean a longer commute for many drivers.

"Construction season here in the Truckee Meadows is really whenever the weather allows it," RTC spokesman Joe Harrington said.

Starting Wednesday, Second Street near Renown Regional Medical Center is closed to eastbound traffic from Kirman Avenue to Kietzke Lane. Westbound is down to one lane.

Plumas Street is also under construction between Plumb Lane and California Avenue. Lanes are already reduced and more closures are coming.

"We're also going to be closing down Plumas Street between Plumb and Marsh to all but local traffic for several days," Harrington said. "That closure is slated to take place on September 4, 5, 8 and 9."

The pavement project is expected to be complete in October. "That'll really address all the damage you see to the roadway out there, again, making that location much mother for vehicular travel and much more accommodating for everyone," said Harrington.

RTC's website has maps of all current road projects, so you can see which areas you might want to avoid.

"There are alternate routes available," Harrington said.

Harrington said alternate routes are available, but the detours should not deter you from going to local businesses. "We really want people to know if they need to get to those businesses, they still can. They remain open and accessible."

No matter where you are going, use caution.

"It's really important people are always looking for pedestrians, particularly the construction workers, in construction zones to avoid any sort of accidents," Harrington said.
