Toronto, ON -- (Sports Network) - Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick each took advantage of their first-round bye with strong second-round performances Tuesday at the $2,615,000 Rogers Masters in Toronto.

Djokovic, the No. 3 seed and defending champion of the event, needed just an hour, 17 minutes to quiet scrappy Canadian Frank Dancevic, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, the sixth-seeded Roddick was tested by Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut. The American lost a second-set tiebreak, but settled down and took the third to complete a 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win.

Damp conditions halted play and the first-round match between Russian Marat Safin and American Sam Querrey was suspended until Wednesday due to the rain. The duel will resume at 1-1 in the opening set.

In other first-round action, only three matches lasted more than the minimum two sets: 13th-seeded Fernando Verdasco rebounded to upend Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2; Croat Marin Cilic needed three sets to take care of Lukas Dlouhy 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; and Arnaud Clement of France went the distance against Swede Jonas Bjorkman, ultimately losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

Tomas Berdych, the 16-seed, made quick work of Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round.

Russian Igor Andreev, who was last week's Croatia Open runner-up, sputtered to a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) conquest of France's Gael Monfils. Gilles Simon, last week's Indianapolis champion, pounded American Donald Young, 6-1, 6-3.

The other first round matches featured two-set affairs amongst unranked opponents: American Jesse Levine ousted Canada's Peter Polansky, 6-2, 6-4; Robin Soderling topped Argentinas Guillermo Canas, 7-5, 6-1; Russia's Alexandre Kudryavtsev slipped past Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7); Germany's Tommy Haas silenced Spain's Carlos Moya, 6-3, 6-2; Russia's Dmitry Tursunov knocked off Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti, 6-3, 6-4 and Sweden's Thomas Johansson exited Andrey Golubev by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 score.
