Chakvetadze Cruises, Hantuchova Falls At East West Bank Classic

POSTED: 10:29 pm PDT July 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Third-seeded Anna Chakvetadze breezed past Marta Domachowska with a straight-set win in second-round action at the East West Bank Classic on Tuesday.

In the other second-round match -- both of which came after a full slate of first-round matches -- sixth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova was ousted by Olga Govortsova.

The Russian Chakvetadze needed about 50 minutes to dispatch the Polish Domachowska, 6-1, 6-1. Hantuchova, of Slovakia, was on the other end of a lopsided match, dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Govortsova, of Belarus.

Govortsova may next face another ranked opponent. Her third-round opponent will be either wild card American Bethanie Mattek, who won her first-round match on Monday, or 11th-seedeed Nicole Vaidisova.

Vaidisova, of the Czech Republic, highlighted Tuesday's first-round play with a three-set win over Japan's Ayumi Morita. Morita took the first set, but Vaidisova rebounded to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1.

Among other seeded players to advance was ninth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova, who cruised past qualifier Alina Jidkova, 6-0, 6-4. 10th-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta downed Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 6-0, while 15th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova ousted Monica Niculescu 6-4, 6-3.

A pair of qualifiers also advanced on Tuesday. Russian Alla Kudryavtseva took a three-set win over countrywoman Anastasia Rodiononva, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Additionally, Russia's Regina Kulikova beat Elena Vesnina, also of Russia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Other winners Tuesday were American Vania King, who beat countrywoman Angela Haynes, 6-3, 6-3; Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova defeated American wildcard Jamea Jackson 6-2, 6-2; China's Shuai Peng won over American Julie Ditty 6-4, 6-2; Japan's Ai Sugiyama ousted German Sabine Lisicki 6-4, 6-4; and Canadian Stephanie Dubois beat American Ashley Harkleroad 6-2, 6-3. China's Meng Yuan fought for a win over Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
