Federer Stunned, Nadal Moves On At Rogers Cup

POSTED: 9:32 pm PDT July 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - Top-ranked Roger Federer suffered a shocking loss in the second round Wednesday at the $2,615,000 Rogers Masters in Toronto.

Playing his first match since dropping an epic Wimbledon final in five sets to Rafael Nadal, Federer was upset 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 by Frenchman Gilles Simon, last week's Indianapolis champion.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded Nadal ousted American qualifier Jesse Levine, 6-4, 6-2, to move into the third round.

Russian Marat Safin defeated American Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-3 in his rain-delayed first-round match before falling to ninth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-3, 6-4.

Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, the fourth seed, knocked off German Tommy Haas 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) and fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer dispatched American Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-4.

There were a couple of other second-round upsets: Croat Marin Cilic upended 12th-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-3, 6-4; Sweden's Robin Soderling outlasted 13th-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4; Argentina's Jose Acasuso slipped past 14th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; German Nicolas Kiefer beat 15th-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 and Russian Igor Andreev, who was last week's Croatia Open runner-up, topped Czech Tomas Berdych, the 16th seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

In other second-round action: seventh-seeded American James Blake rallied to down Swedish qualifier Jonas Bjorkman 1-6, 6-1, 6-2; eighth-seeded Andy Murray of Great Britain made quick work of Sweden's Thomas Johansson 6-4, 6-4; France's Richard Gasquet, the 10th seed, silenced Russia's Alexandre Kudryavtsev 7-5, 6-3 and Russian's Dmitry Tursunov eliminated Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Rain delayed the start of play on Wednesday.
